Bluebird Nesting Box with House Sparrow Deterrent

If you’re having issues with house sparrows taking over your bluebird nesting boxes, this may be a good option for you. I have had great success over the last several years with these upgraded bluebird nesting boxes, and hopefully you will too.

These nesting boxes are your basic bluebird nesting box, but with an upgrade to help deter unwanted nuisance House Sparrows.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Sparrow Deterrent:

Some bluebird enthusiasts have found that adding a skylight or window to the top of a bluebird box, covered with plexiglass, can deter house sparrows from nesting in the box.

How it Works:

House Sparrows prefer darker, more enclosed spaces. A Skylight or window in the top of a bluebird nesting box, covered with plexiglass, can act as a deterrent for house sparrows, as the increased light and visibility may make the box less appealing to them.

Inside measurements: Approximately 5.25” - 5.5” by 4” - 4.25”.

Vent Holes: 4 - 3/8” vent holes. 2 on each side at the top of the nesting box.

Entrance Hole: 1 1/2”

These Bluebird Nesting Boxes are built by hand with the following materials:

* Cedar wood construction, so these boxes will last for years. All of the nesting boxes have been constructed using nails and Titebond III glue.

* All of the wood has been sanded and coated with Thompson's® WaterSeal® Clear Multi-Surface Water Repellenter. (Exterior Only)

* Opening side door with latch to keep the door secure, while allowing for the nesting boxes to be easily cleaned after nesting season. The top of the door has been rounded over for easier opening. Triple coated deck screws are used as the pivot point (hinge) of the clean out door.

* Built in Clear Plexiglass Skylight to help deter those nuisance House Sparrows that bully and kill the birds that we actually want using the nesting boxes. Skylights are installed using a clear construction sealant and adhesive.

* Reflective tinted film. This heat reducing window film is designed for blocking out most solar rays by reflecting them away from the plexiglass, helping to keep the nesting box cooler during the hot summer days. The one way window film blocks out 95% UV rays and 81% infrared rays.
